EU deeply disappointed by court ruling on Tymoshenko's appeal against gas case verdict

29-08-2012 15:45

The European Union is deeply disappointed with the decision of the Higher Specialized Court of Ukraine for Civil and Criminal Cases to throw out the appeal of former Ukrainian Premier Yulia Tymoshenko against her conviction in the gas case.

"We noted with regret the ruling of the Higher Specialized Court of Ukraine. We are deeply disappointed with the consequences of the current situation, when two important opposition leaders cannot stand in the upcoming parliamentary elections, [and] when the court disrespects international standards for fair and transparent processes," a representative of the European Commission, Michael Mann, said in Brussels on Wednesday. He said it was important for the Ukrainian authorities to take specific steps to eliminate the problems in the court system, as well as selective justice, in particular in the cases against Tymoshenko, former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko, and others, and not to allow similar situations to occur again. According to Mann, the EU is also concerned about another sentence of Lutsenko. He added that the EU would monitor the situation with the cases against Tymoshenko, Lutsenko, and others.
